Where Are We
Over $450,000.00 has been spent purchasing over 25,000 new books for the library during the last school year. The focus has been on fiction and non-fiction books. During the first semester, more than 10,000 book have been checked out. The library is open before school, during nutrition and lunch and after school. Attendance is at an all time high.
                  
Where Are We Going
The reference area is the focus for new purchases this school year. New reference books have been ordered and are expected to be on the shelves soon.
         
Mission
The mission of the Olive Vista Middle School Library Media Center is to ensure that students and staff become effective users of ideas and information.

Reading Counts
Reading Counts is a computerized reading incentive and assessment program. Students select books marked by yellow dots. After reading the book, the student takes a computerized test. An individual or group report is generated and given to the teacher.
         
Leveled Reading
Books have been purchased to support the Success for All reading program. These books range from picture books to high school level library books.
         
Professional Materials
Professional materials are available to assist teachers in preparing for instructional units and for professional development. Materials are arranged close to the copy machine in the library for convenient access. Brain Based materials are just a few of the latest additions to this section of the library.
         
Instructional Videos
The library video collection contains over 500 tapes, including a complete set of Bill Nye, the Science Guy to support the science standards.
         
Homework Kits
Homework kits are available for checkout to use in the library. Supplies contained in the kits include scissors, glue, rulers, stapler, marker, and crayons. Tutors are available before school, during nutrition and lunch and after school through the Gear Up program.
         
Computers in the Library
Students have access to twenty computers in the library. The computers have Internet access as well as databases such as SIRS Discover, an interactive reference tool. Grolier’s encyclopedia is available on fifteen computers. Individual CD-ROM’s , such as Encarta , Math for the Real World and How Your Body Works, are also available for classroom use.
